The Clinical Cost of Sunscreen Misinformation

Just last week, a 34-year-old woman sat in my exam room waiting to show me [Dr Eleryan] screenshots on her phone of the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) 2026 sunscreen guide after her follow-up visit was completed. She told me that she was shocked to see some of the sunscreen recommendations listed on her Mohs surgery postoperative handout because they are unsafe. Why? Because they contain ingredients that are labeled as unacceptable with concerns about them causing biochemical or cellular level changes and endocrine disruption. She let me know that the EWG gives them between a moderate to high hazard score— and based on that alone, she decided not to buy them.
