Clinical Activities:

Clinical responsibilities for our residents are split evenly between George Washington Medical Faculty Associates/University Hospital and the Washington, DC VA Medical Center. At each site, time is specifically allocated to weekly sessions at Children's National Health System.

Andrews / Bolognia Textbook Review
  • At GW, all medical dermatology clinics serve as continuity clinics as patients are specifically booked under individual residents. Residents are on a rotational schedule with all faculty members for clinical and educational oversight. Residents have unique visit types that enable exposure to specific clinical engagements such as  the Acute Dermatology, Hidradenitis suppurativa, and supportive Oncoderm with Dr. Adam Friedman. Residents also rotate through Mohs and the High-Risk Skin Cancer clinic with Dr. Vishal Patel, Rheum-Derm clinic with Dr. Karl Saardi, and Pediatric dermatology with Yasmine Kirkorian at Children’s National
  • Residents serve on the inpatient consult service on a rotational basis with Dr. Karl Saardi, Director of the inpatient consult service. Each consult service rotation lasts three months. 
  • Resident’s have a full day of cosmetics during their surgical month block and participate in a monthly resident cosmetic clinic with Dr. Pooja Sodha. In addition, residents rotate through SkinDC with Dr.s Terrance Keaney and Jessica Kalen for live patient demos and hands on teaching.
  • Resident dermatopathology rotations are incorporated into the resident rotations all three years. First and second year residents have two weeks dedicated to dermatopathology; third years are allotted a full month to dermatopathology. 
  • Second and third year residents are given the opportunity to complete an elective rotation or pursue research at a non-affiliated institution within the United States or abroad. This elective is allowed to be up to four weeks in duration. Previous elective rotations have included: Health Policy Elective (Dr. Elizabeth Robinson) and ABC News, New York Elective (Dr. Angelo Landriscina).

  • While at the VA, residents participate in general dermatology clinics, dermatology surgery cases, laser clinics, and inpatient rounds.
  • Residents work closely with Drs. Mary Maiberger, Nasir Aziz, Pooja Khera, and Lauren Payne.

  • Dermatopathology textbook review led by Drs. Joseph Zahn, Frank Glass, and Dr. Grace Kao.

Weekly Resident/PD + APD Meeting and Lecture

  • Residents meet weekly with Drs. Friedman and Karl Saardi for resident meeting and lecture/kodachrome review.

Textbook Review

  • Taught by third year residents

While on GW service, residents participate in the following monthly conferences:

  • Departmental Journal Clubs (typically Mondays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays) from 12-1pm.
  • Clinicopathological Conferences (CPC) (typically Mondays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays) from 12-1pm.
  • GME Core Curriculum on Wednesdays from 12 noon – 1 p.m.
  • The GME office offers a core curriculum lecture series for all residents with topics ranging from patient safety to quality improvement from September through June.
