Resident Research Requirement

Residents conduct an approved research project culminating in a submitted manuscript at the conclusion of residency training as a requirement for graduation.

Goals of this requirement are to learn and understand:

  • The need for proper controls
  • The importance of reproducibility
  • The ethical issues important in research
  • Vital role of statistics
  • How research aids in understanding benefits and limitations

Each resident must choose a mentor/faculty advisor by application date

  • Research has shown that this ultimately makes for a better residency experience (Mills OF et al. Fam Med, 1995; 27: 188-193)

Reasonable projects include:

  • Meta-analyses
  • Chart reviews/retrospective studies
  • Survey-based studies
  • Pilot studies
  • Bench research
