CMG Clinical Rotations

Medical Dermatology Rotation

During the medical dermatology rotation, residents gain experience in:

• General outpatient dermatology
• Supportive oncodermatology
• Hidradenitis suppurativa
• Bullous disorders
• Pediatric dermatology
• Vulvar health
• Dermatologic surgery

Rotation highlights include:

• All medical dermatology clinics at GW serve as continuity clinics, with patients scheduled specifically under individual residents.
• Residents rotate with all faculty members for clinical supervision and educational oversight.
• Specialized visit types provide focused exposure to acute dermatology, hidradenitis suppurativa, and supportive oncodermatology with Dr. Adam Friedman.
• Residents rotate through Mohs surgery and the High-Risk Skin Cancer Clinic with Dr. Vishal Patel.
• Pediatric dermatology training is provided with Dr. Yasmine Kirkorian at Children’s National Hospital.
• On Wednesdays, residents rotate among the pediatric dermatology clinic at Children’s National Hospital, dermatologic surgery cases, and the Vulvar Health Clinic at George Washington University and Capital Medical Group.

Surgical Rotation

Residents have a dedicated, month surgical rotation focused on dermatologic surgery and cosmetic procedures.

During this rotation:

• Residents participate in cosmetic clinics with Dr. Sodha on Mondays.
• One day each month is dedicated to treating their own resident clinic patients.
• Residents receive hands-on cosmetic training at outside practices.
• Residents gain additional experience in Mohs surgery, excisions, surgery consultations, and other dermatologic procedures with Dr. Patel and other voluntary faculty.

Dermatopathology Rotations

Dermatopathology training is incorporated into the curriculum during all three years of residency.

• First-year residents complete two weeks of dedicated dermatopathology training.
• Second-year residents complete two weeks of dedicated dermatopathology training.
• Third-year residents complete one full month of dermatopathology training.

Elective and Research Opportunities

Second- and third-year residents may complete an elective rotation or pursue research at a non-affiliated institution in the United States or abroad.

• Elective rotations may be up to four weeks in duration.
• Previous electives have included a Health Policy Elective with Dr. Elizabeth Robinson and an ABC News elective in New York with Dr. Angelo Landriscina.

Resident Didactics

Every Thursday is reserved for a full day of resident education, from 8:00am - 5:00pm. The didactic schedule is developed by the Academic Chief Resident and includes a combination of:

• Grand Rounds and other academic conferences
• Faculty and visiting-professor lectures
• Dermatologic surgery and cosmetic lectures
• Dermatopathology education
• Textbook review
• Kodachrome sessions
• Meetings with program leadership

This protected academic time provides residents with a structured and comprehensive educational experience that complements their clinical training.

Conferences and Educational Activities

Journal Club and Clinicopathological Conference (CPC) are each held once a month on Tuesdays during the lunch hour (12:00pm - 1:00pm). 

During each academic year, residents also participate in four Grand Rounds programs and four Krazy Kodachromes conferences.
